Day 1: Leave Kigali for Akagera national park

Your Discover Africa Safaris Tours driver guide will be waiting to pick you up from your accommodation in Kigali and give you a briefing as soon as you have your test results and are prepared to begin your safari. You will pack your luggage and leave for Rwanda’s south after the briefing.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial Grounds will be your first destination, where you can learn more about the 1994 Rwandan genocide before continuing on to the Kimironko Market. After lunch, you’ll continue on to the Akagera national park. You’ll get there in plenty of time to check in at your hotel and unwind before dinner is served.

After dinner, you’ll spend the night at Akagera National Park.

Day 2: Day Game drive and evening boat ride

Get up early and get ready for this fun day. After breakfast, you’ll go on a game drive into the savannah plains. The Akagera National Park’s fauna will be yours for roughly 4 hours. Giraffes, lions, rhinos, buffaloes, leopards, and other animals like impalas will be visible to you. Following your wildlife drive, you’ll head back to your lodge to watch the sun set and eat lunch there.

After lunch, you will join a boat ride on Lake Ihema for a chance to see the birds and aquatic life of Akagera National Park. This Lake Ihema boat excursion is a fantastic opportunity to go bird watching, observe hippos wading in the lake, and spot crocodiles.

Before returning to your hotel for dinner and another night’s stay, your Lake Ihema boat journey will conclude with a view of the setting sun.

Day 3: Community tour and transfer to Volcanoes national park

Get up later and enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel. You will leave the hotel and go to the neighborhood to interact with the people that live close to the park. Spend some time around the village learning about different lifestyles before connecting to Kigali for lunch.

You will continue driving to the Volcanoes national park right after lunch. You will travel for little more than three hours to get to your lodging in Volcanoes National Park. Dinner will be served after you have checked in. Your first night will be spent at the national park of the volcanoes.

Day 4: Mountain gorilla trekking and cultural center visit

Have breakfast at your accommodation, then meet with your driver-guide to go to the Volcanoes National Park administrative building for your morning briefing prior to your gorilla trekking adventure. Following your ranger guide into the forest, you will rent everything you might need for the expedition. Depending on how far into the forest the mountain gorillas are, the hike will take you about two hours.

Volcanoes Gorilla Trekking

You will spend an hour photographing and filming your day’s mountain gorilla family after meeting them, and then you will leave the bush. The hotel will be your next stop after lunch. To participate in the Rwandan cultural experience, you will return by car to the Iby’iwachu Cultural Center. There is an organized group of Rwandans prepared to accompany you on this adventure. You will return to your hotel for dinner before it gets dark, and you will then spend another day in the Volcanoes National Park.

Day 5: Transfer back to Kigali

The last day of your safari is today. You’ll awaken prepared to end your journey. After breakfast, check out of your hotel and depart for Kigali. If you have time, you can set aside some time to visit the memorial for the Dian Fossey Fund. Continue your journey to Kigali, where your driver guide will drop you off at your hotel or at the international airport in time for your flight home.
