Gombe Stream national park

Gombe stream national park is a protected area and one of the smallest national parks in Tanzania. Located 20 kilometers north of Kigoma in the western Kigoma region, the park is 52 square kilometers in size and borders Lake Tanganyika to the west and thigh rift escarpment to the east.

Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park is a prime habitat for chimpanzees. It was established in 1943 as a national reserve and later elevated to national park status in 1968. Jane Goodall’s research on chimpanzees, which began in 1960 and continues to this day, is the longest-running research and study of its kind in the world.

Gombe national park is well-known for being the site of her research. Jane Goodall, at the age of 25 and without formal college training, traveled to Tanzania in 1960 and began her research on chimpanzees based on the fact that they share over 80% of their genetic code with humans. During her studies, she conducted research on Fifi, the matriarch who is the last surviving member of the first group studied by Jane Goodall when she arrived at Gombe national park; at the time of her arrival, Fifi was three years old, and today she is observed during chimpanzee tracking excursions.

The landscape of Gombe stream national park resembles that of Mahale in that it consists of a sandy shoreline, steep slopes and river valleys of forested mountains, and is dominated by rolling grasslands, evergreen and steep slopes covered in semi-deciduous forest. This park is home to various species of primates, including baboons, blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and many others. Gombe national park is acknowledged as a prime primate territory in Tanzania and is home to over 150 habituated chimpanzees.

Between November and April, Gombe national park is home to over two hundred species of wildlife, including both resident and migratory species. African broadbill, Black saw-wing, Crowned eagle, Double-toothed barbet, Kenya rufous sparrow, Livingstone’s turaco, Palm-nut vulture, Peter’s twinspot, Red-capped robin-chat, Red-chested cuckoo, Ross’s turaco, Yellow-rumped tinkerbird, and many others are among the bird species in Gombe national park.
